Search Tips, From YIL, Marylaine Block

Here are some useful search tips taken from the June 2001 issue of Yahoo Internet Life. These tips will be helpful when researching the web for the first project. You will probably finds loads of information concerning your research topic, in this case web hosting. The objective here is to use the search techniques below to narrow down your search and find the best information possible. Remember it may be necessary to run several searchs to find the best information.

 

01 Search small pieces of the web, not the entire web.

 

02 Use precompiled directories as well as search engines.

 

03 Narrow down sweeping topics.

 

04 Understand that different search words produce different results.

 

05 Know when to use library databases rather than a web search.

 

06 Know what makes information trustworthy.

 

07 Use wedge words.

 

08 Move from general to specific and back again.

 

09 Explore the invisible web.

 

10 Ask yourself who would produce this kind of information.
